Chinese Red Envelopes - Chinese New Year - A Very Special Occasion

In many East Asian cultures, the giving of gifts is thought to imbue both the giver and recipient with certain favorable characteristics or materials. Chinese Red Envelopes, or "yāsuì qián," and Chinese New Year Red Envelopes are given to celebrate the Chinese New Year, Weddings and other special occasions. To be certain that the wedding of a couple is a success, and to guarantee a long, happy life together, these Chinese Envelopes are given by the newlyweds to their families, friends and wedding attendees. The more money in the envelopes, the better off and more rewarding the couple's financial and married life will be, according to ancient custom.

This practice continues today, though the origin is centuries old. As ancient and current a practice, Chinese New Year Envelopes are routinely given to younger generations by grandparents, relatives and parents, and sometimes even close friends and neighbors filled with money to buy another safe and fulfilling year for the recipient. In some cases, employees will receive year-end bonuses in red envelopes as an extra show of gratitude and blessing.

Also known as Ang Pao in Min Nan, Sae Bae Don in Korean, Lai See in Cantonese, Lì Xì in Vietnamese and hóngbāo in Mandarin, the widespread belief in this custom has made a reliable supply of Chinese red envelopes and Chinese New Year envelopes hard to find in many cases. Why red? Red is the color of "luck." And never give monetary quantities with a 4 in the amount, as this is equated with death. Even amounts are preferred over odd, and new, crisp bills with no coins should always be given. Wondering where to find these Chinese envelopes? Instead of wasting your time scouring your city's stationery stores and shopping centers, you can turn to the internet for a dependable source of Chinese red envelopes in all sizes and shades.
